Established in 1959, the Pittman-Frizzelle Scholarship Fund was the first permanent endowment established with United Methodist Foundation. J.B. Frizzelle and Dare Pittman Frizzelle created the scholarship fund in memory of their daughter, Virginia Dare, who died in childhood.
One recipient wrote: “This scholarship helps make it possible for me to attend Methodist College. My college degree will help me accomplish the goals I have set. I am really enjoying my time at Methodist thanks largely to the support I have received. I hope some day to give to others as you have given to me.”
In the last 47 years, the fund’s initial gift of $15,000 has provided more than $67,900 in scholarships to 84 students. At the close of 2006 the fund’s value was $81,700 – ensuring additional support will be available for future scholars. UMF continues to work in partnership with the Pittman Frizzelle family to share the good news of this scholarship with prospective students.
Since the Frizzelle’s gift, many other individuals, families and churches have followed. UMF is trustee for more than 100 scholarship funds with over $4.5 million in assets supporting higher education, mission workteams, and camping scholarships.Anyone can create a scholarship fund.
