Donor Stories: One Who Is Loved Fund

- Serving Methodist children with medical needs

“In a very special way, I want children with hurts and needs to know that United Methodists love them and care,” Mr. Warren said as he created the One Who Is Loved Fund, a permanent endowment fund in trust with United Methodist Foundation.

In 1992 James Warren, a member of Longview UMC in Raleigh, established the fund in memory of his wife, Novie Christine Warren, on the anniversary of her birth. This special fund provides grants, up to $1000 each, for children 18 years of age and younger, in need of financial assistance for special medical needs and whose families are members of a United Methodist Church.

A mother’s joy

“How do you measure joy that comes from a mother’s heart when a need of her child has been met?” These were the words of Margaret Hockett, pastor of Epworth UMC in Wilmington when she presented a check to Justin and his family on behalf of the “One Who Is Loved Fund” for which UMF serves as trustee. The grant for Justin made possible extensive dental work which had not previously been possible due to limited family finances.

Every day a new adventure

“Thank you so much! The gift helped get some of Robert’s medical bills paid off.” These words of thanks came from the mother of another child helped by the One Who Is Loved Fund. After surgery, Robert left his wheelchair behind and now can ride his bike and sometimes walk without crutches.

“Every day is a new adventure for Robert, and he always knows that God is with him every step he makes. I came to Zion UMC by way of my son who told me he wanted to be baptized and become a member of the Church. After his surgery, I started going to church on a regular basis, and the more I went, the more I wanted God in my life.”

A much needed blessing

Five-month old Laura was a grant recipient of the One Who is Loved Fund. The grant money will be used to help offset the cost of extensive surgery Laura needs to repair severe nerve damage in her right arm. “This wonderful gift from The One Who Is Loved Fund Endowment is a much-needed blessing to the family,” said Rev. Laura Early, pastor of All God’s Children UMC. “Laura is a beautiful gift from God, just as the spirit and love that created this wonderful gift is a great blessing to all of us,” she added.
